Hell Hath Frozen Over... Could it be true? A Duke Nukem Forever teaser from 3DRealms?
December 19th 2007, 16:15 GMT by OmegaFoRCe

Long long ago, in a Crap far, far away, there were Crappers making fun of 3DRealms and their seemingly unending development cycle of Duke Nukem Forever. Could the legends of a real video game actually be true?

And behold - the word of legend: http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=29639

Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever.
After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming.

Tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th, around noon CST, we will release the first teaser trailer from Duke Nukem Forever. To tide you over until then, here is a screen shot taken from the teaser.

Thank you for being fans of the game and for your continued patience.

I'd like to thank the people on the team that worked so hard to create this teaser and the friends of 3DR that helped create it (Jeremy Soule and Julian Soule, Frank Bry, Jason Evigan and of course, Jon St. John).

I was expecting them to do a blow the doors off the barn thing, where weeks later people are still stammering around going "I still can't believe it was just that awesome", but this felt more like a firecracker and less like some napalm.

I'm not sure that's possible anymore, even if they come up with something that really is genuinely barn door explosive then it still won't get a fair shake.  At this point the DNF saga is entirely separate from any game that might once have been involved, the story is the story and nobody cares about the game.  If I was Scott or George what I'd do is a) pull the plug, b) write a tell-all bestseller and c) make games.

Of more interest however, if you're at Gearbox, is Borderlands.  I can't forgive them for Blue Shift, the Halo port or for giving Foodbunny cancer, but damn if that game doesn't look mighty fine.  At least, it does in my head.

Blue Shift was just fine. Especially the last part with the half-concealed proto-teleporterish thingie. Old, decrepit technology being used in lieu of contemporary science always wins. Actually, that is what had saved T3 of all things for me.

Heh. That's nothing, mate. Both BlackSite and Soldier of Fortune: Payback retail at twice that price and are about half as long.

And they're shit.

What I've seen of Borderlands looks good enough that I want to know more. The weapon generation system was pretty staggering, the driving looked a blast and you only need to say "open world action RPG" to me and I'm already salivating.

It was a Randy "Most Enthusiastic Man on Earth" Pitchford demonstration I witnessed, however. Seems like a lovely guy, but I always get the feeling that the show of supposedly ad libbed fratboy whooping is actually expertly crafted. It trips some kind of paranoia switch in me that makes me wonder just how accurate a picture of the game you get from his presentations, particularly since it's hard not to be buoyed along by his cheeriness. I don't know if there are videos of him double-teaming with Brothers in Arms military advisor, Col John Antal, but it's worth a google. The pair of them are mad as a bag of knees. In one viewing of Brothers I was at, there was a minor glitch - a rocket clipped through an enemy without exploding. Some journalist in the front row made the mistake of smirking. You don't smirk at Col Antal! Antal's loomed above him, barking, "You ever fired a rocket launcher, son? No? Well, I have - and sometimes you miss!"

The NSA 0wnz popular firewalls and 'secure' email services

CRYPTOME reports that the US National Security Agency (NSA) has remote administrative access to several of the most popular Windows PC firewalls, and that it has also taken control of a number of supposedly "secure " email services within the past few months.

It writes that the personal computer firewall software products from MacAfee, Symantec and Zone Alarm all "...facilitate Microsoft's NSA-controlled remote admin access via IP/TCP ports 1024 through 1030... without security flag."

My question about the DNF trailer was "why release that at all?"  I think their best course of action is simply to stay completely silent until they have gone gold.

"Why would I wanna read the book? All I'm saying is, I see a game every day. I watch baseball every day. I have a better understanding about why things happen than the computer, because the computer only tells you what you put in it. I could make that computer say what I wanted it to say, if I put the right things in there. ... The computer is only as good as what you put in it. How do you think we got Enron?"

I love how George backtracked a bit under the moniker 'managing expectations'. As if he couldn't have known that this teaser would be judged as if representing the final product anyway.

No, wait a minute...you're not serious about SoF Payback, are you? Do you know how long I've been waiting for the next installment? If you're serious, please say so, because that was my next 360 purchase...I will NOT fork out cash for a game like that! I was extremely pissed at Gears of War, because I beat the damn game in under ten hours. It's a pathetic, drowning POS team of developers who'll fucking release ANY game that's under ten hours...I don't give a SHIT about the gameplay, that's a slap in the face to customers and a mockery of the respect they have for themselves. I was two inches away from buying Payback yesterday...

Yeah what Ds says, word on the 'street' is it's shit.

I like games under ten hours too. But when they start dropping below something like 6 hours (and assuming they're linear/nonreplayable) I start wantin' the price to be lowered. Full retail price is still quite a bunch of monies, and there's a limit to what they can put in before we'll start complaining. Portal-length games could be 25-30 bucks and I'd be pretty happy about that.

But thank fuck we're at least partially out of the must-have-25-hours-gameplay doctrine, what a boring load of ass some games turned into because they felt they couldn't cut all the bullshit.

Complaining about the length of a game is a specious argument. It's a lazy way to say that a game wasn't fun enough or had too much filler or didn't fully exploit its premise or whatever. Say what you mean dammit!

All fun is not created equal. Uncharted is a fun game. Crackdown is a fun game. But Crackdown is much more fun than Uncharted. The amount of fun in a game is not solely based on quantity.

I'd rather play 10/10 fun game that lasts for an hour than only slightly entertaining 10 hour game. But still, for $20+ I'd expect more than one hour of gameplay, even if it was pure platinum fun. But of course, with platinum-grade fun you can usually enjoy replay. Portal was fun even for the 2nd time, even when it had the same linear story. OMG, STORY, BOB, STORY!

You're right on that, it was slow for an FPS, and maybe even for puzzle game at moments (walking, waiting for platforms, etc). It wasn't slow for adventure/logic game. Don't forget that Portal was more of an experiment than real FPS/puzzle/adventure/whatever game. I wouldn't say it was GOTY. Which reminds me of the list topic.

That's why I don't get that the Qt3 groupthink is sucking some hefty Portal cock. I mean, it's an interesting experiment with a great game added to it (because without the final level, it would've been really boring). But GOTY? It's just not big and ambitious enough for that.

It's a GOTY candidate because, even though it is very short and ramps up too slowly, it doesn't have any filler or annoying parts. It doesn't outreach its grasp. I feel sorry for anyone who can't appreciate that.

And of course the short comment is just referring to the main story. Like Peggle, the extra content increases the length of the game several times over.
