Hell Hath Frozen Over... Could it be true? A Duke Nukem Forever teaser from 3DRealms?
December 19th 2007, 16:15 MSK by OmegaFoRCe

Long long ago, in a Crap far, far away, there were Crappers making fun of 3DRealms and their seemingly unending development cycle of Duke Nukem Forever. Could the legends of a real video game actually be true?

And behold - the word of legend: http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=29639

Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever.
After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming.

Tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th, around noon CST, we will release the first teaser trailer from Duke Nukem Forever. To tide you over until then, here is a screen shot taken from the teaser.

Thank you for being fans of the game and for your continued patience.

I'd like to thank the people on the team that worked so hard to create this teaser and the friends of 3DR that helped create it (Jeremy Soule and Julian Soule, Frank Bry, Jason Evigan and of course, Jon St. John).

I dunno.  I can see Vampire Weekend being English Beat-y

there wasn't anything remotely ska like in there. There was a clear african sound to it.

I have to agree with jjohnson here.  The song he heard on Letterman, at least, A-Punk, seemed more English Beat to me than Talk Talk.  Talk Talk's classic sound put the synths much more forward than the Vampire Weekend song, which is all about the jangly guitar and drum beat.  English Beat isn't a perfect match either, but it seems closer to me.

I'd be surprised if he hadn't heard Mirror In The Bathroom.

It's actually kind of annoying because I've been trying to get a hold of a really good new track they've recorded, but it doesn't seem to have been released yet and the fact there's two different incarnations of the band now doesn't help searching this stuff down.

A song from 1986 popped almost complete into my head yesterday. Quite the odd experience, one second I was installing XNA; the next humming along the music with three quarters of the lyrics pretty much intact.

Some sort of misfired neuron I guess.

I gotta say, I don't think they sound much like the Beat at all.

I should have made it clear that I meant the version of A-Punk they played on Letterman sounds like English Beat.  There's much less ska sound to the actual album.  Sorry for the confusion.

I picked up Warhammer 40k: Soulstorm the other day and I have to say that I'm really disappointed.

Note that I've never played Dawn of War multiplayer, but I've gone through and enjoyed the previous single player campaigns several times and have enjoyed them all.  Soulstorm is really one step forward and three steps back from Dark Crusade.

Good stuff: the new new races are colorful and fun.  It keeps the turn based campaign system that I really enjoyed from Dark Crusade and has made it bigger, spreading it out over several planets.

Bad Stuff:  The load times are really long and not just for the missions, it takes like a minute to get to the campaign screen.  Overall, I would estimate that all load screens are about 3-4 times longer than Dark Crusade.  The Campaign map is small and hard to read.  The only new units that every race gets are air units and, so far, the air units are worthless.  Soulstorm barely even tries to present a story.  Dark Crusade didn't have the much in the way of plot but it was frickin' Moby Dick compared to Soulstorm.  My biggest pet peeve is not saving bases from captured territories like you could in Dark Crusade.  If you defend a territory, you have to build your base all over again and with my favorite race, Imperial Guard, being so weak in the start game, that's a big hit.  Does it make the game tougher?  Sure but it also makes it alot more tedious as defending each territory can take 3 times as long as it could in Dark Crusade.

I'm a Dawn of War junky and, mostly, I'm happy that I'm getting more of the same but still, paying $40 for an expansion of a 4 year old game, I was expecting alot better.

I was all set to buy Soulstorm until I read the thread over at qt3. They all described pretty much exactly your experience with the game. The 2 new factions and air units aren't worth the $40 and the lack of Relic really shows on the lack of polish in the game. So I just stuck with Dark Crusade and stuck it on my laptop (hooray for no cd checks!).

I retried Emperor: The battle for Dune and Red Alert 2 today, after a long time. I still suck at RTS games. I never seem to find a balance between offense and defense, and somehow the AI always manages to crush my rushes with far less units than I send.

Apart from that, I really enjoy the cheesyness of Westwood cinematics. The production values of Westwood games sure were impressive. The president's red phone with the huge MOSCOW sticker on it is fucking awesome. I had forgotten about that gimmick that was so omnipresent in 80s cold war movies. And that office and uniform from the Russian president... hilarious!

If it provides solid fun I'm there. I am expecting a high level of polish and large quantities of various environments and enemies though, they can't get away with too much uninspired rehashing. After twelve years the game needs to exude creativity in abundance, surprise you with excessive details and do it all without breaking a sweat.

I did just recall that video they leaked a little while back, and if they're honestly going to portray Duke just as he was back in '96 then we have a big problem.

Maybe you have - actually, a "big problem" would be trying to portray Duke as anything but the way he was back then - Duke Nukem is not a franchise which I could see a thorough re-imaging of the core concept/character helping. Or, you know, what Jibble said.

Well yeah, but I'll still call that a problem with the franchise. We are talking opinions here after all, and of a totally unreleased game at that, so the facts-to-opinion ratio will by necessity be rather low.

When he sucks, yeah, of course. It's not a magic bullet, they could reinvent him badly as well, just look at Sonic. But then Samus was reinvented in a cool way, so it swings both ways. I'm saying I won't stand for a Duke as one-dimensional as the one from '96 though, if they make Serious Sam I'm outta here.
